DETAILS OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE AT UNIVERSITY LEVEL

From LAUTECH to EKSU

Since I was appointed Lecturer I at the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in 2002, I have taught a large number of medical undergraduate (300, 400, and 500 Level MBBS) students in the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Unit, in the Department of Surgery, at least five times a year for eight weeks each time. The teachings included lectures, tutorials, group discussions, and instruction and demonstration of procedures like Plaster of Paris Casts, Tractions, Manipulation Under Anaesthesia (MUA), etc. I also helped organize exams and test undergraduate students up to the final MBBS examination. I also helped set up and run the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) when it was first introduced. I was the go-to person in my department when it comes to Information and Communication Technology (ICT).Between October 2008 and March 2009, I worked as an adjunct lecturer at the new College of Health Sciences at Osun State University in Osogbo. There, I taught Gross Anatomy to the 200 Level MBBS students. In March 2009, I converted the adjunct position to a year-long visiting lecturer position. I oversaw the Department of Anatomy for a brief time. I was involved in hiring both academic and technical staff for the department. I also helped develop the curriculum for the department and planned, supervised, and oversaw the building of the department. In addition, I lectured the 200 and 300 Level medical students regional Gross Anatomy covering Upper and Lower limbs, Abdomen and Pelvis, and the Thorax. Over the year, I acted for the Provost of the College whenever he was on leave. In October 2010, I transferred my service to the University as a professor of surgery. Between August 15, 2010, and May 2011, I was the Head of the Department as well as the Dean of the Faculty of the Basic Medical Sciences. In 2011, I moved my services to Ekiti State University as a Professor of Surgery. I have been the Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, the Head of the Department of Surgery, and the Provost of the College of Medicine.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES AS CONSULTANT ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON

From LTH to EKSUTH

From 2001 to 2011, I was employed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and traumatologist at LAUTECH (now UniOsun) Teaching Hospital in Osogbo. From then until now, I have worked at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH). Currently, I hold a locum tenens position with LTH. I am involved in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic and traumatic disorders in patients. Patients referred from local private and public hospitals, Outpatient Departments, and hospitalized patients are cared for. Because there are so few orthopaedic surgeons on the ground, it is impractical to specialize, thus we see all orthopaedic and trauma cases.

I actively engage in the weekly departmental reviews, seminars, and postgraduate rounds organized for resident physicians and medical students by the department. My Consultant Orthopaedic Clinic is open twice every week, and elective surgery procedures are performed on Wednesdays. The Accident and Emergency unit was handled by a rotation of orthopaedic surgeons.

I am currently the head of the hospital’s Ethical Committee and a past co-editor of the hospital’s official, peer-reviewed journal, the Western Nigeria Journal of Medical Sciences (WNJMS).

I was also the pioneer Head of the Department of Surgery at EKSUTH.

POST GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP CANDIDATES SUPERVISED AT PART II LEVEL.

I have successfully supervised or co-supervised six resident doctors’ Part II FMCS dissertations, five from LTH and one from the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex in Ile-Ife.

Locum Appointment at State Specialist Hospital Akure, Ondo State Nigeria

Between 2003 and 2008, I was invited by the Hospital Management Board of Ondo State to give specialist orthopaedic and trauma care to patients in the State Specialist Hospital, Akure. That was when I started the Orthopaedic and Trauma Unit in the Hospital. I conducted weekly ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and occasionally surgical procedures. I was also involved in the on-the-job training of their Medical Officers and Interns. I increased the number of patients every visit to the clinic from virtually none to over sixty. The unit is now fully developed with several orthopaedic surgeons and medical officers.

Research Methodology Courses at the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria

I also teach and guide postgraduate medical students during their residency training for the Fellowship of the West African Postgraduate College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. Since 2005, I have been lecturing at the biannual update/revision courses in Research Methodology for the Part 2 Fellowship Candidates of the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College held at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba Lagos.
