Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN)

Established in 1963, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) is the apex medical organization in Nigeria, and it regulates the practice of medicine in Nigeria. It controls all aspects of medical practice in Nigeria including medical education, entry of foreign medically trained practitioners into Nigeria and disciplinary matters. According to the MDCN website, the MDCN is responsible for the following:

a. Determining the standard of knowledge and skill to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the medical or dental profession and reviewing those standards from time to time as circumstances may permit.

b. Securing in accordance with the provision of this Act, the establishment and maintenance of registers of persons entitled to practice members of the medical or dental profession and the publication from time to time of list of those persons.

c. Reviewing and preparing from time to time, a statement as to the code of conduct which the council considers desirable for the practice of the professions in Nigeria.

d. Supervising and controlling the practice of homeopathy and other forms of alternative medicine; (1992 No. 78).

e. Making regulations for the operation of clinical laboratory practical in the field of Forensic Pathology, Autopsy and Cytology, Parasitology, Chemical Pathology, Medical Virology, and (1991 No. 78).

f. Performing the other functions conferred on the Council by this Act.

Nigerian Medical Association (NMA)

Reputed to be the largest medical association in West Africa, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) is the umbrella body of all medical practitioners in Nigeria. It is a vibrant organization with its own website and journal, The Nigerian Medical Journal.

Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN)

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has as its members, the specialist doctors in Nigeria. It is an affiliate of the Nigerian Medical Association and is “the largest specialist medical association in the West African sub-region with over 2,000 members from teaching and specialist hospitals from all parts of Nigeria.

The official journal of the association is the Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice.

National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD)

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) is the umbrella body of all resident doctors in Nigeria. It is a very vibrant association that has been very active in improving the renumeration of doctors in Nigeria. At present, it has no website! It has a Wikipedia page and a research initiative page which contains research related to the welfare of resident doctors.

Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners in Nigeria (AGPMN)

The Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners in Nigeria (AGPMN) is the umbrella organization for all medical and dental doctors in private practice either as owners or employees. The association appears not to have any website. Its headquarters is at No 9, Sam Sonibare Street, Surulere, Lagos.

Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria

The nursing profession in Nigeria is regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). The Council maintains standards of practice and enforces discipline within the Nigerian nursing profession. There are currently close to 250 nursing schools approved by the Council across Nigeria.

National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM)

The umbrella body for nurses and midwives in Nigeria is the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).

Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN)

The PSN is the umbrella body for pharmacists in Nigeria. According to its website, the PSN has the following objectives:

To maintain a high standard of Professional ethics and discipline among its members

  • To promote and maintain a high standard of Pharmaceutical Education in Nigeria
  • To promote legislation for the enhancement of the image and the interest of the Pharmacy Profession and the Practitioners in Nigeria.
  • To collate and disseminate statistical, scientific, and other information relating to Pharmacy and publish such in an Official Journal
  • To advise on Labour conditions relating to Pharmacists.

Nigerian Society of Physiotherapists

The NSP have their website here. It contains a lot of information about the society in Nigeria. The association also has an official journal that is published quarterly journal.

Medical Rehabilitation Therapists (Registration) Board of Nigeria (MRTB) is the regulatory board of physiotherapy in Nigeria.

African Journals Online is the world’s largest and preeminent platform of African-published scholarly journals. It is a treasure, an archive of most of the journals published in Africa. AJOL hosts 610 Journals including 306 Open Access Journals. As of July 2022, AJOL has 16 701 Issues, containing 205 251 Abstracts, with 198 908 Full Text Articles for download of which 136 074 are Open Access. That’s what I call fantastic.
